Poseidon Board Meeting, Monday February 6th at 6:00 in the game room at Thorbeckes. NUTRITION: After heredity and training, nutrition plays the largest role in the quality of a swimmer's performance. Healthy Habits – the next couple of months, I will be giving each swimmer a “healthy habit” goal to try and develop. I will introduce a new “healthy habit” each month. HABIT #4- Read Labels We all know that the best foods to eat are “whole foods”; foods that are not processed. However, we also know that is not always possible. When you are forced to eat foods that come in a wrapper, carton, or box…remember to read the label. Here are a couple of tips: 1) If you cannot pronounce an ingredient, you probably do not want to eat it. 2) If in the first five ingredients you see sugar or high fructose corn syrup; you probably do not want to eat it. 3) Look for foods that are high in protein and low in sugar or fat. Pay special attention to “fruit snacks” and “granola bars”; some brands are worse than eating a candy bar or gummy bears. Remember, if in doubt…read the label. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!!!! Every swimmer should have a water bottle at the end of their training lane. Swimmers sweat during their workouts; the same amount of dehydration occurs during a swim workout as does a person doing a “dry” workout. REMEMBER your water bottle every day. It is just as important as your cap, suit, and goggles. You wouldn’t come to swim practice without one of them – don’t come without your water bottle. THOUGHT OF THE MONTH: Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Choose your words. For they become actions. Understand your actions, for they become habits. Study your habits, for they will become your character. Develop your character, for it becomes your destiny. -Unknown |
